Female condoms, or femidoms, have been with us for many years but are still largely misunderstood. Female condoms are used as barrier contraceptives, and to reduce the risk posed by sexually transmitted infections (STI) such as gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV. Female condoms can also be used during anal sex, but their usefulness in protecting against infection in this role has not been fully evaluated.
The female condom is essentially a plastic bag that is placed inside the vagina prior to intercourse. The outer ring of the female condom remains outside of the vagina and partially covers the vulva. It has been suggested that this feature provides additional protection when compared with the male condom.
The original female condom (FC1) was made from polyurethane. The second generation female condom (FC2) made from nitrile was introduced in 2005. Since 2009 all female condoms have been made from nitrile. The FC2 female condom is slightly cheaper to make than the FC1, and tends to be quieter during sex.
Polyurethane female condoms were often washed and reused - although this behaviour was never recommended.
