We think that latex clothing looks good in any situation and with any finish. Some people prefer a matt finish for their latex clothing, whereas other like to use latex polish to give their custom latex clothing a gloss finish.
Most latex clothing and fetish wear retailers sell latex polish to give your latex clothing a shiny appearance. However, these latex polishes are usually quite expensive. We all need to make a profit, but these retailers are having a laugh at your expense. Latex polish simply isn't that expensive.
Another issue with commercial latex polish is the instructions given for application. Most latex polish comes with the instruction to spray on and them wipe with a soft cloth. These instructions are written by people with no idea of the chemicals they are selling. Wetting agents adhere to the surface they are sprayed onto. This wets the surface; or to put it another way it give a wet look. You guessed it, the shiny finish. Latex polish does not work like shoe polish or furniture polish. Wiping latex polish does not buff up your latex clothing, it simply removes the latex polish!. Latex polish should be sprayed onto your latex clothing and left to dry. This will give a high gloss, wet look finish to your latex clothing.
The chemical sold as latex polish is actually a mould release agent. These are often referred to as wetting agents. They are sprayed onto mould surfaces to act as a barrier. This makes it easier to remove the finished item from the mould. These wetting agents are usually a solution of silicone emulsion and water. The proportions vary, but most consist of 60 percent silicone emulsion to 40 percent water. The emulsion also contains water, so when you buy a latex polish about half of it is just water. The silicone emulsion used tends to be an anionic emulsion of a medium viscosity polydimethlylsiloxane. These emulsions can be diluted to a significant degree. In fact they can be reduced as far as one part emulsion to 20 parts water, so always read the label of your latex polish carefully. Paying through the nose for a bottle of tap water is nobodies idea of fun.
The biggest joke is that identical solutions of silicone emulsion and water are sold on the high street for domestic purposes at a fraction of the cost of latex polish. So shop around before you buy. In addition to its use as a wetting agent, latex-polish is also used in the food industry, the textile industry, in offset printing, and also the motor vehicle maintenance industry. Always read product labels carefully to ensure that you are using the materials described above.
The silicone emulsions used should be non-hazardous with a very low order of toxicity. However, prolonged skin contact or eye contact may cause irritation. So spray carefully and always follow the safety instructions provided by the product used.
