Most rubber clothing suppliers offer a very limited size range and do not supply plus size latex. A few offer UK dress size options, but usually only up to about a size 18. The majority only offer S, M, L and XL. At a squeeze the XL might go up to a size 20. However, even the largest size options have difficulty coping with the larger bosom. Rubber Rapture custom rubber clothing can be made in any size.
The term Big Beautiful Woman, or BBW was first used in 1979 in Carole Shaw's BBW Magazine for plus-size women. Today is it usually associated with a sexual desire for overweight women. BBW is often used synonymously with the term voluptuous women, although they have slightly different definitions. Voluptuous means large breasts and wide hips, whereas many big beautiful women may actually have quite small cup sizes. BBW is essentially a euphemism for the term overweight. Other common euphemisms are: plus-size, queen-size, full-figured, curvy and Rubenesque.
The actual definition of BBW is very subjective and ranges from the slightly overweight to the morbidly obese. BBW can be considered a product of body shape. As a culture we tend to obsess about female body shape. Over the centuries the concept of the ideal body shape has changed.
Female body shape tends to be defined as a function of the ratio of bust, waist and hips. These are referred to as inflection points. The bust circumference is measured around the fullest part of the breast. This usually means over the nipples. This bust measurement is generally taken while wearing a bra, although the bra style can significantly affect the result. In contrast the waist is measured at the narrowest part of the abdomen. As with the bust, the hip measurement should be taken at the widest point.
These three standard measures, or inflection points, are generally used to describe the female figure. Various body shapes can be described using these ratios. The most commonly used body shape ratios are: apple, banana, pear, and hourglass.
The apple body shape describes a women with large shoulders and relatively small hips. This results in a downward facing triangular shape. Triangular women tend to have slim legs and hips, with fat build up in the abdomen, chest and face.
The banana shape, also known as a straight or rectangular, has a waist only slightly smaller than the bust and hips. This can result in an androgynous appearance.
The pear body shape is also described as spoon shape or bell shape. The hip measurement is larger than the bust which results in an upward facing triangular shape. Fat build up is generally around the hips, buttocks and abdomen.
The hourglass shape describes roughly equal bust and hip measures, with a much smaller waist. Less than 10 percent of women have an hourglass figure, although many people try to fake it through the use of corsets and waist cinchers. Celebrity women with an hourglass figure are often adopted as the perceived body shape norm for each generation, e.g., Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s, Raquel Welch in the 1960s,
In reality, almost half of all women have a banana figure. The rise of the size 0 fashion model over the last few decades has increased the acceptability of the banana shape for slim women taking on the sex goddess role, a role that was once the preserve of more voluptuous stereotypes such as Marilyn Monroe.
The role of body shape appears to be of greater concern for women than for men. Women tend to be far more worried about their body shape and this unhappiness can be so acute as to affect their health. Woman also tend to promote thinner figures more than men. This goes some way to explain the female fascination with dieting, control garments and cosmetic surgery. Control garments include corsets, girdles and control pants. They represent a simple way to modify body shape in the short term. The affect that control garments have on body shape is relatively mild, although corsets can have quite a significant impact. Control garments generally focus on the waist, hips and thighs. Buttock padding can be used to increase the size of the subject's bottom. The size of the bust can be enhanced with the use of falsies, breast prostheses and padded bras. The bust can be minimised throughout the use of breast binders.
A more radical and long lasting form of body shape alteration is the use of surgery. Breasts may be augmented through the use of various types of breast implant. Alternatively, breast size can be surgically reduced. Drew Barrymore is one of the more famous celebrities to have undertaken breast size reduction surgery. Liposuction is a common procedure for reducing fat content, usually in the region of the stomach and hips.
Despite the obvious need for plus-size clothing, noticeable use of plus-size models rarely occurred until the mid 1990s. Several of these new models, such as Mia Tyler, Anna Nicole Smith and Queen Latifah, became internationally recognised celebrities.
Mia Tyler is the daughter of Aerosmith front man Steve Tyler, and half-sister of actress Liv Tyler. Mia began plus-size modelling aged 20. She has also appeared topless and semi-nude in a number of photographs.
A plus-size model is primarily engaged in the promotion of clothing for larger women. However, they are often employed for focussed product advertising such as footwear, watches, sunglasses etc. Photographs of this type often have a narrow field of view which conceals the physical dimensions of the model. The typical qualities of a fashion model still apply to plus-size models. These include clear skin, a well proportioned body and a relatively tall size - usually in excess of 175cm.
The area of plus-size modelling is not without controversy. Despite the criticism made against size zero models for representing unhealthy body types, similar criticism is applied to plus-size models. The argument being that they promote and glorify over eating. This is despite the fact that plus-size models are not actually that large.
In fact the small size of these so called plus-size models is itself a cause for criticism. Most plus-size models are no larger than a US 12/UK 14. This is not exactly large, especially when you consider that most specialised plus-size clothing retailers start at about a US 16/UK 18.
The whole clothing industry seems to be in a state of turmoil at the moment, with most designers still working from data on average body types that is over 30 years old and makes no allowance for physical attributes such as a large bosom. However, some designers are slowly waking up to the idea that their clothes simply don't fit. It's amazing that it is taking so long.
Another important factor affecting body shape is the waist-hip ratio (WHR). The waist-hip ratio is simply a subject's waist measure (taken at the narrowest part) divided by their hip measure (taken at the widest part). Although there are many variations in physical attraction across cultures and between individuals with respect to body shape, body size and bosom size, the role of WHR remains fairly consistent within any culture. For example, most Europeans find a waist-hip ratio of 0.7 to be most attractive. This results in a waist size that is 70% of the hip size. Many female sex icons have a 0.7WHR; including Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren. In China the preferred WHR is 0.6 and in Africa it is between 0.8 and 0.9.
